Length of Stay

Process addiction treatment can be divided into three major stages

Stage 1. Admission, abstinence, clarity and acceptance. During the beginning stage of treatment, individuals develop rapport with staff and peers; engage in guided self-assessment and goal setting;  reconnect with healthier lifestyle practices; learn the policies and procedures of the program; develop an understanding of the nature of process addiction; and begin the work of recovery and re-engagement with "life."

Stage 2. Moderation management in an setting begins with a structured model of progression through increasing levels of pro-social attitudes, behaviors, and responsibilities. Therapists, coaches and staff guide interventions which assist in changing attitudes, perceptions, and behaviors related to excessive technology use and to address the social, educational, vocational, familial, and psychological needs of the individual.

Stage 3. Community re-entry is intended to facilitate the individual's separation from the program and successful transition to the larger society. reSTART graduates leave the program with a plan for balancing their use. Follow-up recovery services may include individual and family counseling; and educational and vocational coaching. Self-help groups such as Internet and Technology Addiction Anonymous (ITAA) are often part of the treatment process, and residents are encouraged to start such groups on their own.

Length of stay is individually determined, and is based on a number of variables including a client's desire, willingness, and readiness for change.

Research performed by the National Institute of Drug Addiction (NIDA) found that "clients with many serious problems (e.g., multiple addictions, mental health disorders, and low employment), are more likely to have better outcomes with treatment stays of at least 90 days."
