What is the Participant Fund Account Used for?
Financial Skill Development
In addition to detoxing from the Internet and technology, one of the aims of reSTART is to help young people navigate the work of life. In "real life" most of us work, we get up on time, we plan the day, we earn a paycheck, and pay our bills. At reSTART, we have developed a system whereby young adults earn points (which convert into a mock monetary fund). This fictitious monetary system allows particpants to develop financial management skills.
The system is built in such a way as to reward good performance (e.g., if a participant completes all tasks appropriately and on time). Excellent performance comes with a weekly $50 bonus. This weekly stipend amount comes out of the participant fund account and is used as a tool to teach young adults how to budget their income, how to spend their money wisely, and to demonstrate the concept of working for what you earn. Some students may not be successful in earning much more than their mock bills require for a variety of reasons, and thus may not draw any funds from the participant fund account. It's really up to each participant, their developmental level, and their desire for individual success in this area.
Personal Necessities
This fund also covers extraordinary participant expenses during each 45-day stay such as special clothing needed for Wilderness Awareness adventures (e.g., hiking boots), personal toiletries (e.g., aftershave, or makeup), and other personal care necessities (e.g., one student needed to have his eye glasses replaced having lost them before arriving at reSTART).
All equipment such as backpacks, sleeping bags, tents, and canoes etc. are provided for use by reSTART guests. Any equipment damage due to abuse will be billed to participant’s fund account.
Specialist Care Needs
In some cases, participants may need care above and beyond what reSTART offers as part of the program. For instance, a young adult with Asberger's Syndrome may need to connect with an occupational therapist. Should the need arise for extra care, the participant fund account may be used to cover the cost of co-pays, or specialized treatment expenses upon sponsor approval.
All unused funds left in the participant fund account will be returned to the financial sponsor upon completion of the program. Statement of fund use will be maintained by the participant as part of the life-skills training and provided to sponsor at session completion.
